Unsure of what you need out of a phone plan? Read our guide on how to choose the best one to suit your needs.

What to expect from Verizon Prepaid

Verizon Prepaid offers both a plan without data and one with premium data.

What makes Verizon Prepaid unique from their competitors is that they offer premium data. With premium data, your connection speeds will not slow down no matter the amount of network traffic. The Prepaid Unlimited Plus plan offers premium data, while the other plans utilize deprioritized data. With deprioritized data, your speeds will slow down during times of high network congestion. This happens in high traffic areas, like concert venues, crowded stores and parking lots, or sports stadiums. Verizon also offers call filtering with their plans, which blocks scam calls.

Their plans offer up to 4k Ultra High Definition resolution when streaming. Verizon Prepaid plans offer connection capabilities in Mexico and Canada as well as internationally, depending on your plan.

Coverage

Verizon’s network gives users amazing speeds throughout the country.

Verizon offers great coverage and speeds across the country, but the best coverage for you comes down to your location. It’s important to compare between providers on a coverage map of your specific city. Ookla’s coverage map allows you to see where cellular towers are located and which company owns them. Comparing tower locations can help you determine which of the big 3 network providers meet your needs.

The Plans

Verizon Prepaid offers a wide variety of plans to choose from depending on your needs.

Each plan is also eligible for a discount if you sign up for Autopay. The average phone user uses about 20GB of data per month, so any of the plans with Verizon’s prepaid program that include data would be a good choice for the average user.

Let’s talk about each Verizon Prepaid plan individually, and what they offer for their customers.

Best Overall: Prepaid Unlimited Plus

This plan comes with 50GB of premium data per month, then deprioritized data afterwards. It also allocates 25GB of premium data as hotspot data. You also get deprioritized data after the hotspot cap.

This plan costs $70 at full price, and $60 with the Autopay discount. You get 75GB per month including hotspot data for $0.93 per GB at full price.

Pros: premium data, hotspot data, price

Cons: no unlimited premium data

Conclusion: best for heavy data users

Runner Up: Prepaid Unlimited

This plan comes with unlimited deprioritized data. While your speeds may slow down depending on the amount of network traffic congestion at your location, it will never slow down due to the amount of data you use. You also get 5GB of hotspot data each month, and access stops once you hit the limit.

This plan costs $60 at full price, and $50 with the Autopay discount.

Pros: truly unlimited data, separate hotspot allotment

Cons: deprioritized

Conclusion: best for average to heavy data users

Prepaid 15GB

This plan comes with 15GB of full speed data each month. After you hit the 15GB cap, your speeds will slow to 2G. At 2G speeds, users can still scroll social media and send text messages or emails, but playing games and streaming video without WiFi will be difficult. You can also use plan data as hotspot access.

It’s important to note that this plan doesn’t offer premium data access – the data with this plan is deprioritized.

This plan costs $45 at full price, and $35 with the Autopay discount. At full price, you get 15GB per month for $3 per GB.

Pros: hotspot access

Cons: no separate hotspot data

Conclusion: best for light to average data users

No Data

This plan comes with unlimited talk and text, but no data access. If you’d like to use data on this plan for any reason, you’d be limited to 2G speeds only. You don’t get hotspot access with this plan either.

At full price, this plan costs $35. The Autopay discount brings this plan to $30.

Pros: unlimited talk and text

Cons: expensive

Conclusion: best for those who don’t use data or always have WiFi

To have a comprehensive picture of how much data you use month to month and what plan you need, we’d recommend checking your data usage before committing to a plan.
